Peer Advisor on Food Security

Description

The UCSB Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity and the UCSB Sustainability Program seeks undergraduate student workers to provide peer counseling on resources available to students to address food insecurity. They will share information on CalFresh, campus food pantries and mobile food distributions, the Financial Crisis Response team, and other resources related to financial, housing, and food needs.  Students will receive training on campus resources, the issue of food security, and how to listen to and advise a student in need.

Duties

·         Host weekly drop-in office hours where students can come by to learn about food security resources

·         Initiate follow up meetings to track the progress of student’s food security status

·         Provide information on food security related resources and offer direct aid

·         Track metrics related to the number of students served and other information required for reporting

·         Provide evaluation forms so students can provide feedback on the service

·         Assist the food security coalition with other assorted tasks at times when there are not students coming into office hours. This will be mostly administrative tasks and could include some work developing communications pieces.

Minimum requirements

·         Familiarity with the issue of food security

·         Compassionate to the needs of students experiencing food insecurity

·         Skilled listener

·         Demonstrated professionalism, including adherence to confidentiality

·         Professional in written and verbal communication

·         Detail oriented

·         Able to work set hours each week

Preferred Requirements

·         Experience working on projects that specifically address the needs of underrepresented communities

·         Outstanding interpersonal communication skills

·         Experience working with diverse partners

·         Knowledge of Calfresh

·         Knowledge of and experience working with the LGBT community

·         Past Experience as a Peer Advisor (not specific to food security)
