Tutor Academic Communities for Excellence in Chemistry (ACE Chemistry)

The ACE Chemistry Program at CLAS offers support for students taking the general chemistry series. ACE Chemistry students meet once each week for ninety minutes in small (5- to 7-person) study teams, each facilitated by a tutor who provides chemistry help as well as structured academic skills lessons.

CLAS Academic Skills is looking to hire tutors who can facilitate three ACE Chemistry teams per week. Weekly responsibilities will be as follows: attendance at all meetings of the assigned chemistry lecture (3 hours), facilitation of 3 ninety-minute team meetings (4.5 hours), preparation for team meetings (1 hour), and weekly training meetings (1 hour). In addition, tutors will attend an 8-hour training session during the weekend before the first full week of fall quarter.

All training, lecture attendance, and preparation hours will be paid at the rate of $15.32/hour.  All team sessions will be paid at the rate of $21.24/hour.

Minimum requirements for this tutoring job are

  • Junior or senior standing in chemistry, biology, or another relevant major that requires Chemistry 1A-Chemistry 1C as of fall 2018;
  • Strong academic performance in chemistry classes;
  • An overall GPA of 3.3;
  • Interest in teaching;
  • Availability to attend a chemistry lecture (generally Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
  • Availability to attend the first training before Week 1 of fall quarter.
