UCSB Associated Students

Routes Coordinator

June 2019 • Santa Barbara, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with a group of people who were like-minded about doing what we can to make UCSB more sustainable and our planet. I loved working for an organization that was student-run organization because you saw what your tuition and fees were going towards.

What I wish was different

I think in a job like this you always want and wish you could do more and it's not always possible. As an alumni I would love to see this organization grow and help UCSB increase their waste diversion rate and become a zero-waste university. I also hope that ASR continues to connect more with the UCSB and Isla Vista community.

Advice

The job can be a lot of physical labor at times, but it is always worth it. The people, experience, and satisfaction of knowing your work really matters and makes a difference outweighs getting a little dirty.

Recycle Route Rider

September 2017 • Isla Vista, CA

What I liked

Recycling route riding is for a good cause: easing the process of recycling and compost on and around the campus of UCSB. While fulfilling, route riding is also a way to get exercise and listen to music, so it's a very time-efficient job to have.

What I wish was different

Learning one's own route can be very difficult, especially if one doesn't know the campus very well. Also, some of the bikes need maintenence; having to fix one's own bike during a route can be difficult and time-consuming.

Advice

Pay attention and take notes during training! It will make you learn more quickly, which is dire in this job.
